Did you know that recent advances in science technologies has resulted in the cure of otherwise incurable diseases? The answer to diseases such as heart disease, cancer, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, autism, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease are found from within embryonic stem cells. Embryonic Stem Cells are pluripotent cells, meaning that embryonic stem cells are undifferentiated; that they have the potential to become any type of cell in the human body. This recent discovery of isolating embryonic stem cells can potentially be a major step in saving millions of lives from these deadly diseases in the near future. At first thought, the use of embryonic stem cells seems to do no harm, in a perfect world that is, these embryonic stem cells would cure a multitude of diseases. In order for the stem cells to be used, they are obtained by scientists only through the destruction of the embryo. An embryo is made up of eight cells- and cells are the basic unit of life- after the egg cell and sperm cell unite, and is considered an embryo for the first 8 weeks of life. Over 35% of the population does not support the use and research of embryonic stem cells, and yet over 12% of federal funds go towards supporting the research of embryonic stem cells. Federal funds come from taxpayers dollars, and no matter what the situation is, people don’t like their money to go to fund research for a cause they strongly don’t support. If someone wants to support a cause they believe in, that’s their personal choice, but the government shouldn’t force taxpayer dollars to go fund research for something they believe against.
