The novelist, critic, and political activist, Émile-Édouard-Charles-Antoine Zola was born on April 2, 1840 in Paris, France. After his father died when he was only nine years old, him and his mother lived in poverty during a long period. Zola started his writtings after he found employment in a newspaper company. Where he met manny writters that also influenced in his ideas. Emile Zola, became one of the most prominent French novelist of the late 19th century. During his lifetime, Zola made his presence felt in almost every area of the literary world. He was always involved in controversies about literature. The term naturalism is defined as a type of literature that attempts to apply scientific principles of objectivity and detachment to its study of human beings. On the other hand, realism, focuses on literary technique, a manner of treating subject matter that presents a careful description of everyday life. Naturalistic works exposed the dark harshness of life including violence, racism, corruption, prejudice, prostitution, disease, and poverty. Therefore naturalistic writers were frequently criticized for focusing too much on human vice and misery. Naturalism became very poputal among the writers of the 19th century. Zola put a lot of efort to emphasize that writters should be writing about the daily social and political issues like industrialisation, the growth of the cities, the birth of consumer culture, the condition of the working class, crime, prostitution, the follies and misdeeds of government, to call attention to them. He took a stand to write about them not simply forensicall, but subversively, ironically, satirically. His writing style might have been harsh, rough, and not as elegant as other writters in many ocations but he was straight foward with the points he was trying to
