Emily Dickinson’s poem, “I heard a Fly Buzz-when I died” portrays the moments right before her death. In my poem, “I heard a Butterfly Flap- when I exited my womb, juxtaposes Dickinson's subject about death, and instead portrays the beginning of life. Dickinson introduces fly as the symbolism for death. That is why when the line that states “there interposed a fly”(line 11) shows that the fly blocks the speaker from the light of her life, and it introduces her to her death. I introduce a butterfly instead of a fly to represent life. This is because butterfly represents the beauty and innocence. When babies are just born, they only see the beauty of life, like the butterflies, who are only around colorful environment like flowers. Fly, on the other hand, live around decomposed bodies, unpleasant environments, and gruesome trash. When I point out in lines 11 and 12 that, “Darkness in here had already comforted me, then - there rushed in the butterfly” is portraying that the butterfly introduces my speaker to the beauty of life in contrast to the fly who interrupted the life and introduced death. “The Stillness in the Room/ Was like the Stillness in the Air”( line 2-3). “When the king/ be witnessed” (line 7-8), shows that the “king” symbolizes God or the light for the speaker in the poem to cross over. Dickinson states “King” as the God because kings are ones who direct the nation and give out order. In this case King (the God) directs the life and death. In my poem, I state “ queen” instead of “king” because queen signifies a person who is able to give life to the palace, and protect the king. When the speaker in my poem is in the hands of the queen or “when the queen, Caressed [the speaker], the “queen” giving life to the new creature.
