Emma Mae was hospitalized because of several neurologic problems. When she was 21, she was diagnosed with a transient episode of blindness. Emma Mae could not see objects in the center of the visual field of her right eye. At 23, she developed a motor problem in her hands, but she recovered in a few weeks. At 26, her present illness is characterized by ataxia of gait, a tendency to fall, and nystagmus. Examination revealed that her right optic nerve was much paler than her left optic nerve. She had an intention tremor in her arms when she was asked to touch her nose, and she had difficulty in making alternating pronation and supination movement of her arms.
