Emotionally intelligent leadership is a compilation of different components that include nineteen capacities from the topics of consciousness of self, consciousness of others and consciousness of context. The capacities that stand out to me include flexibility, initiative and building relationships. Flexibility is an import aspect in leadership because leaders have to adapt to their surrounding and circumstances. Initiative is the power to take charge and I believe that initiative leaves to achievement if people put in all their effort into a goal, they will be able to achieve it. A key aspect of consciousness of self includes understanding your abilities and skills. People gain an understanding of their abilities by playing to their strengths. Strengths can includes previous experiences that develop overtime. Another topic that was stressed in the chapter included making self-awareness a priority. To become an emotionally intelligent leader, you must understand your motives, values, and inner workings. Before completely understanding self-awareness, reflection is needed to obtain feedback. Constructive criticism is important because it promotes communication and personal growth. Due to reflection, people will have the ability to change and become a better leader. Professionalism is an important feature in businesses and organizations because it helps develop relationship between coworkers and clients, and it is an important characteristic that is valued by companies and any place with a professional atmosphere. Many of the points listed in the PowerPoint can be applied to college students. A topic under workplace etiquette listed “respect everyone” as an example. In a workplace, coworkers have to be civil and polite towards each other despite the hierarchy between superiors and people in lower-level positions. This applies to me as a college student because I treat my classmates, teaching assistants, and professors with the same amount of respect. Other points include mobile phone etiquette and timeliness. Phones should be turned on silent and put away during a professional situation or in a classroom. Timeliness is important in arriving to meetings or lectures to prevent disruptions.
