1. A 13 year old cannot work more than two hours in one day - On a school day, a pupil can work a maximum of two hours. On the hols, a pupil aged 13/14 can work up to five hours per day, but not more than twenty five per week.
2. A 15 year old can work eight hours a day between 7am and 7pm at any time -Only true during school holidays, a Saturday, and any week day of the holidays – but a maximum of thirty five hours per week.
3. If I leave school when I am 16 I can work as many hours as I like when I like -16/17 year olds may not work more than forty hours in a week. Must have twelve consecutive hours rest and must have two days off a week.
4. I should check with my doctor that I am able to manage school work as well as employed work - Unless you have an underlying health condition, it is not necessary to have a check up with your doctor before you start part time employment.
5. By law people over the age of 14 must be paid the minimum wage - From October ’06, 16/17 year olds in employment must be paid the minimum wage of £3.72. All apprentices under 19 must receive a minimum income of £80 per week. The national minimum wage for 18–21 year olds is £5.03.
6. An 11 year old can do a paper round – Nobody may work legally until they are 13 years old.
7. I can work for my parents in a restaurant or shop at any age – If you are under 13 years of age, you cannot work even if you aren’t paid.
