Valentine is the only person in the world that truly loves and cares about Ender. She protected the little Ender from Peter's ruthless attempts to injure and even kill him. In fact, it was Valentine who ignited Ender's enthusiasm to go to battle school. As a result, she became a major influence on Ender's life. In contrary to her compassionate and caring nature, Valentine is actually extremely manipulative but she doesn't want to control Ender. Commander Graff used Ender's love for Valentine in several occasions motivating him to continue in battle school and eventually inducing him to destroy the bugger species.

The first occasion when Valentine used her influence on Ender was when she was convincing him to go to Battle School. "Your brother hates you because you are living proof that he wasn't good enough. Your parents resent you because of all the past they are trying to evade." Valentine's words made Ender think that he is desperate and the only option he had been to go to battle school. At this stage of the story, Ender is only a six years old boy. Leaving him in the battle school solitary will have significant and capricious impacts on Ender's psychological state; Isolation leads to a 26 percent increase on death rates.
