Children. The future of today’s society, also a main part of the totalitarian society that is depicted in Ender’s Game. Ender’s Game is a futuristic novel in which extremely talented children are selected to train for the war against an alien race, the buggers. In this novel, the government was run in a hegemony, where the IF (International Fleet) was at the top of control. The art of bending someone. In Enders Game, manipulation was used as common as dirt. The students are often lied to, and in the book Ender was manipulated a multitude of times. This ease of manipulation for the adults was key in getting Ender to reach his full potential, and was something that was not as easily obtained with adults. Adults are more practical. They do not fall into skepticism as easy, and they are not as easy to manipulate. They always think one-step ahead, and that is a problem for having them manipulated. Children are the ideal choice for being manipulated. For instance, Ender is an example of how manipulation was used to get a better ending. The teachers would manipulate Ender to think that no matter what happens no teacher would ever come to help him. They also manipulated his surrounding so that he would always be in isolation. Manipulation was used a mean to the end. It helped Ender strive, because Ender had to realize that the only way that he would strive was to get past his obstacles. The IF could use Valentine as a tool in order to get Ender to do what they wanted. When Ender was slacking behind, or when Ender was reluctant to go to command school, the IF only needed to use Valentine in order to get what they wanted from Ender. This sort of strong-arm manipulation does not work as well on adults, for they know when they are being conned. Using children allowed the adults to manipulate easier and made it so that the students could strive and push themselves past their expectations. Finally, manipulation allowed Earth to win the last battle against the buggers. In the final battle between the buggers and civilization, Ender was led to believe that he is fighting against Mazer Rackham in the final battle, when in reality he is controlling real people’s lives and fighting against the bugger
