One of the tubes visualized on the CXR is an ETT or endotracheal tube. An ET tube is essentially an artificial airway. It is a long plastic tube that is introduced into the patient’s trachea during intubation in order to establish and maintain an open airway, as well as to allow for ventilation of patients that are unable to breathe on their own. Endotracheal intubation is a therapeutic procedure commonly performed in critical or emergency situations where a patient is unable to maintain a clear and open airway, are at risk of aspiration, or experience respiratory distress or failure due to an airway obstruction, trauma, head or spine injury, decreased level of consciousness, cardiac arrest or coma. ET intubation may also be a planned procedure
