The Friday night agenda of a high school student can include an array of activities. Some choose to hang out with friends, go to their school’s sports game, or even just sit home and relax after a long week of school. And then there is me. I dedicate my Friday nights to be a member of a community service leadership program: Energeia.
The objective of Energeia is to create community leaders in the youth. Every meeting starts out with a communication activity and, honesty, I initially dreaded them. Their purpose is to illustrate that the most efficient way to complete a goal is for a leader to emerge. At the first couple of meetings I shyly retreated and obediently obeyed the commands I was given. After a few weeks of witnessing my peers fearlessly take initiative, I conjured up the gall and took the lead.

We needed a new approach, so we reconvened and modified our execution and delivery to gain more interest from the children. Instead of a listing of the rights and wrongs of health, we asked the children to answer true and false questions. Similarly, we incorporated exercises for the children to complete. One of my favorites was a teamwork activity that we devised to improve social health; the group was split into two teams and the objective was to be the first group to pass a hula-hoop from one end of a line to the other while holding hand; the stipulation was that before one child passed the hula-hoop, he or she would have to complement the child he or she was going to pass it to.
