In the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” the author has established an innocent scene which shows rough love between father and son. Readers of this poem often gets into dilemma about the tone of the poem because it is actually confusing. But tone or the theme of the poem is that the son is describing his father’s love to him. Humans are made of love. They love being loved, watching someone love and make love too. In our lives definition of love keeps changing with time. Love for m&ms slowly turns to love for our soul mate. Thus is there any specific way to love a son? Can the way you love him make you a bad person ? Can a son’s immature definition of love make a father a bad person? Viewed in a positive way, the poem starts with “The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy” It clearly points to the fact that the father was drunk, but whiskey in your blood can not turn your love into a poison! We can assume that father had been working all day and just had few drinks after coming home. We have seen that definition love is different with age, thus we can say that the child found those waltz harsh. He was scared of falling and thus held his dad tight which was not easy for him to do. Men usually are not good at making soft and gentle love to children. Their love is often rough. And such a thing could definitely be expected from a drunk father. And as the son was not crying, we can surely say that the tone of the poem is positive, but the son was just scared from falling down or getting hurt. As mentioned “we romped until the pans slid from the kitchen itself”, the son’s fear of getting hurt is justified in this part of the poem. Holding someone you love and moving around in joy is seen a lot of times. But when you add alcohol to the lover’s blood things can apparently change the way people look at it.
