Course Description
Students will study the short story, novel, and poetry while focusing on the narrative/imaginative and expository research. An ongoing emphasis is placed on independent reading as well as the state content and performance standards.

By completing daily warm-ups (Daily Mind Exercieses), students will be able to identify noun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction (FANBOYS), pronoun, pronoun-antecedent agreement, subject-verb agreement, run-on sentence correction. Students will learn vocabulary selected from works and grade level vocabulary lists.

Unit 2:
Short Stories

Time Frame
5 weeks
Summary of Unit
Students will be read and discuss a short stories that vary by author, time period, culture and style from the Prentice Hall Gold Series and outside resources. The literary focus will be on literary terms (definition and identification, and utilization of in personal writing), elements of story development (plot, characterization, advanced setting, etc.), and literary analysis with a focus on the major, state identified content standards (literal and inferential comprehension, extending understanding and text analysis). Themes such as humor, family relationships, cultural expectations, stereotypes, and others will be explored. Students will be expected to be able to critically evaluate and substantiate their own analysis in response to given questions.
