In the family, mother and Maggie represent the traditional culture of black, while Dee represent the culture of white highly. The two children have some similarities , but they have more differences in the story. Maggie is not as attractive as Dee. She is a thin and awkward girl. He mother notes “good looks passed he by”. Further more, she is shy and lack of confidence. The author says” chin on chest, eyes on ground”. Maggie represents the neglected, disregard American Heritage, The first time the author described her like this: “Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes:she will stand hopelessly in corner, homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arm and leg, eyeing her sister with a mixture of envy and awe...” the scars on her body symbolize the pain imprint left on American Blacks by evil Racial Slave System. On the other hand, Dee is an attractive woman. He mother describes “ nice hair and a full figure” Dee takes pride in her appearance. She dresses in fashionable clothes. When Dee arrives for her visit, her mother says “ Even her feet were always neat-looking” She was influenced by the culture of the white and departed from her traditional black civilization gradually.
