When I began reflecting on my year in English Composition 1113, I realized the large amount of information about writing I have learned in the short amount of time I have had Mrs. Beddingfield as an English teacher. In order to see what specific skills I have improved on the most, I referred to three of my previous essays I have written throughout the last semester. Taking English Composition 1113 as a junior in high school has increased my knowledge of grammar, mechanics, and MLA research format; and this knowledge is best demonstrated in my process essay, narrative essay, and name research paper.
The process essay, “How to Plan a Trip to Walt Disney World” taught me the importance of using proper grammar throughout my writing. The sentence, “Once the guests have determined the resort at which they are staying, they must arrange transportation,” caused me trouble because of the preposition I used to end the first clause. The sentence “I also learned that the name Ainsley is derived from the names Ansley, Ainslie, and Ainslee (Behind the Name).” was difficult because of the need to insert the period at the end of the sentence. I initially wrote it as “I also learned that the name Ainsley is derived from the names Ansley, Ainslie, and Ainslee (Behind the Name.)” I learned that it is incorrect to insert the period inside of the parenthesis and that it is supposed to go on the outside. The sentence “My mother said she knew in that moment that my name would be Aynslee (Willis).” was also difficult because of the need to not italicize the interviewee’s last name. I first wrote it as “My mother said she knew in that moment that my name would be Aynslee (Willis). I learned that it is incorrect to italicize the last name of the person you interviewed. I can now write an essay using correct parenthetical
