Why does the Inner Party get such luxuries and everyone else is left with nothing? The Inner Party are the oppressors in the situation which leaves them with more power over everybody else. The Inner Party has taken control and decides upon basically everything that happens. They doctor records so people don’t know the true history of things. They limit the education of these people so that they will always be too ignorant to know about the situation that they are in. Because they are so uniformed and not intelligent to realize it, the people of Oceania don’t know what is good or bad for them.

2. “”It’s a little chunk of history they’ve forgotten to alter. It’s a message from a hundred years ago, if one knew how to read it.” (121)
The paperweight is a symbol of Winston’s hope that not everything has been altered As the Party controls everything, changing records and such, this is one of the few things that has been discovered to be altered. This paperweight gives the people hope that the truth may still be out there. Though uniformed, the people have realized that all these “facts” they know are too perfect to be true. With the discovery of the paperweight, they’re doubts are confirmed, giving them some hope.
