Good morning, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, and thank you for being here today. My name is Adam, and I’ll be one of the prosecutor in this case. You’re here today to hear evidence in the trial of Mr. Oedipus Rex, who stands accused of making conscious choices by his own free will that determined his tragic downfall. You’re going to hear the defense’s side of the story, and you’re going to be told a lot of things. You’re going to be told that he made the choices because of fate. You’re going to hear a sad story about Mr. Rex. You’re going to find out that he’s a great guy and a hero. You’re going to feel sorry for Mr. Rex. The defense wants you to hear his story and feel sorry for him, because the defense wants you to believe that it was fate.
But that’s not how the law works. There’s a statue right outside this very building of a woman holding a pair of scales. That statue is a beautiful woman—a woman named Justice. And if you go and look at that statue, you’ll see that Justice is wearing a blindfold. It’s because
Justice doesn’t care what Mr. Rex looks like. Justice doesn’t care about his sad story. Justice cares only about justice. I care about the law, too. It’s my job to uphold the law. And today in this courtroom, I’m going to show you that it wasn’t fate that led to oedipus’s tragic downfall and to prove that I will call on three witness Ceron, Teiresias, Shepherd who will prove that it was oedipus who made the choices.
