In the south slave owners owned a large number of slaves, and they also worked, lived, and ate together in groups. Slave owners abused their powers in many different ways. As a slave owner, owning a slave should not have to come to someone being mistreated. The mistreatment of slaves frequently included rape and the sexual abuse of women. Many slaves were killed as a result of resisting sexual attacks. Slave owners abused their power by extensive physical abuse, sexual abuse, and limited eating ability toward the slaves.
One way slave owners abused their power was by using extensive physical abuse on their slaves. Slaves were punished by whipping, shackling, hanging, beating, burning, mutilation, branding, and imprisonment. Those who punished slaves used many of weapons such as knives, field tools, and objects found nearby. The most common weapon used against slaves was a whip. They were usually beaten for working too slow, breaking the law and for other reasons. Slave holders will so far as beating their slave by beating them with bricks and wetting them with water and beating them. Another way slave holders abused their powers was by sexually abusing their slaves. Many slaves fought back, and some died resisting. Women had little say so. As stated in the story, “Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman!” There were many women who were raped. White men could rape women without there being worried of punishment. They were forced to breed and have little control over their families.
