Babies are more likely to become sick from sun exposure, but are also more likely to develop sunburns. Their sensitive skin contains less melanin, the pigment that gives our hair and eyes their color and offers some sun protection. In short, parents must do everything they can to keep babies safe from sunburn.

Sun Protection 101
Infants 0-6 months—Sunscreen is not safe to use, keep them out of the sun. (Robins, 2013)

6-12 months—Use an SPF 15+ sunscreen to all exposed skin and reapply every 2 hours for maximum protection.

Avoid excessive sun exposure between 10am and 4pm, the hottest part of the day.
Don’t forget the sunglasses, choose a pair that blocks at least 90% of the UVA/UVB rays. (Editor CDC, 2013)
