Every novel has to come from somewhere, the inspiration just does not come out of no where. The inspiration can come from many of places, including personal life experience. Some other places writers get their inspiration from are how they were raised, time period they lived in, and tragic experiences. Others may just write about what they personally believe in. A good example would be Kate Chopin, author of many short stories, whom gets her inspiration from all the characteristics named. She grew up in an atypical environment, had hard family deaths, and lived in the nine-teenth century society, all which reflect in her work of "The Story of An Hour". Kate grew up in an environment that was not typical at the time. After Kate's father died she was left to be raised by her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, plus the Sacred Heart nuns at the St. Louis Academy she attended. It was not only just atypical to be raised by all females but for them to have authority as well. Kate seeing authority in women gave her an early idea that women could be independent,which reflected in her writing. The events led her to be indpenedent in her writing, in other words she grew up with women who were independent from men, showing her that there is no need to rely on them. They were espically reflected in the main characater,Mrs. Mallard, seeing life after her own husbands death full of freedom and independence. "'Free! Body and soul free!'" (Chopin 2) Mrs. Mallard said. Kate had many family deaths, which all impacted her writing, but in this particular work only two really affected the story. Kate's husband, Oscar, and her father are the two whom had the most impact. "Kate became a widow at the age thirty-two, with the resosibility of raising six children. She never remarried." ("Kate Chopin Biography" 3). Oscar's death affects the story by having personal expierence of being an independent women after he dies. The main impact that his death gives Kate is knowing a woman does not have to rely on their husband. On the other hand, her father's death is similar to Brently Mallard's, they were both killed in a railroad accident. In "The Story of An Hour" it seems that Chopin gets her main inspiration from her father's death, almost in a way, the story is like her own mother finding her independence after her husband dies. The only difference is Mrs. Mallard dies and her husband lives, the story is changed. She changed it because the nine-teenth century society would not have accepted the story. The nine-teenth century society viewed women differently than they do today. Woman were not viewed that they could be independent, they were supposed to rely on their husband's. The year Chopin
