Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing.
Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.
Jonas and Gabriel painfully got off the sled and crept in a little closer with the bitter cold overwhelming the both of them. Think of the Giver, and my family and friends. I can survive, Jonas mumbled in his head. As he strolled into a community, he didn’t recognize anything, except for that beautiful, peaceful singing, which got louder and louder. Not being cautious or thinking, Jonas dashed into one of the houses to see what all of the racket was.

“ Who are these children?!” a man with blue jeans and a shirt with someone fat and a red hat said.
“ My name is J-J Jonas” he said nervously. “And this is Gabriel.” Jonas said, with a pale face, looking very sick from the unconsciousness. They were in the real world, seeing real people, and Jonas’ face looked unreal. Gabriel looked confused, and deathly ill, and so did Jonas.
“Don’t be so mean to the kid,” said a large woman with a very ugly sweater. “ Why are you here, sugar pie, are you lost? I can give you directions if you need it.”
“No, I’m fine,” replied Jonas trying to stay strong from the mean, angry cold. “Are you okay, honey? You look awfully sick.” the woman said with much concern. “ Do you want medical attention?” Jonas didn’t have enough time to answer. He was passed out, and so was Gabriel. “ Quick, call 9-1-1!!!!” the woman exclaimed. After about 5 minutes, the ambulance came and he was rushed to the hospital.
