Epiphanies In Bless Me Ultima

Throughout the course of all of our diverse lives, we experience adventures and occurrences that shape who we are as a person. As we grow, like Antonio in bless me ultima, we start to realize that the people and things around us are not always what they seem to be. We start to realize that when we see certain things and they change us. We start to question life and start to look for answers. These clear intuitive moments of perceptions are called epiphanies and throughout the course of Bless me Ultima they play an enormous role in the growth of Antonio.
Within the first two chapters of Bless me Ultima we realize that Antonio is incredibly young and innocent. As said on the first page of the book “The magical time of childhood stood still,

One of these appears in Antonio’s last dream which the dead Lupito, Florence, and Narciso are all present in. After seeing each these characters Antonio asks why? “Why must I be witness to so much violence!” and Florence responds, “The germ of creation lies in violence”. (pg 243) What this means is, without violence Antonio would not be able to grow as a person because violence causes change and change forces us to adapt and grow. At this moment after Antonio’s dream we start to see a more accepting Antonio or adapting Antonio because he begins to talk as an adult who has gone through change and has adapted. We see that he becomes more comfortable with his role as a Marez and a Luna saying on page 247 “Then maybe I do not have to be just Marez, or Luna, perhaps I can be both” which he had previously struggled with before and he becomes more accepting to doubt and uncertainty. He also becomes more comfortable with a belief in the power of Ultima and her ways saying that “She was the only person I had ever seen defeat evil where all else had failed. That sympathy for people my father said she possessed had overcome all obstacles” and also asking her to bless him at the end of the story on page
