This story is about the epiphany of a mother-daughter relationship problems. This family is African American and grew up in poverty in a small town. A mother, who gave up everything and worked every day to help provide for her daughters. They grew up in an old house, which was built in old scrap and wood. Growing up most people didn’t have a choice for where they came from. In Dee’s case, she hated the environment she came from. She was like most people who didn’t agree with poverty. Dee wanted an escape or in other words “out”. She chooses a path that would allow her to accomplish her goals and aspirations. Dee was a quote on quote mothers favorite. Her mother was very proud of her accomplishments. Maggie on the other hand which is the second daughter, is more shy and reserved. …show more content…
She stills lives with her mother and haven’t accomplished anything major. Maggie seems to feel less loved then compared to Dee. Her sister has the upper hand on things then Maggie does. Her family predict that she would get married and lived the normal farm life. She is someone who is described as weak and beneath her educational sister and her accomplishments. A grandmother’s quilt is what has cause tension between the two sisters. A quilt which has been passed down by the family for years. Both of the daughter’s wants to have the quilt. Dee wants to put the quilt on display to flaunt her family background and history. On the other hand, Maggie wants to use the quilt as what it is and that’s for everyday
