I can remember this day like it was yesterday. I am driving with my mom around my neighborhood when all of a sudden I spot a homeless person strolling on the sidewalk. He is around the age of sixty, with a hunch back, wearing old ratty tattered clothes and has grayish straw like hair with a look alike Santa Clause’s beard. He has all of his belongings in a shopping cart pushing it around wherever he went. I feel shocked that a person living like that who had nothing was walking around my neighborhood. I am naive in thinking that not a lot of people live life like that since I do not witness it often but that was about to change.
My friend Jordan invited me to go on a seven day cruise with her family to Cozumel, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands for spring break. I was ecstatic to find out that I could go because I had never been out of the United States before. We had to take an extremely long and tiresome car ride down to Texas where the cruise ship was docked. There is no way to put into words how excited and anxious I was to get on the cruise to visit the Caribbean Islands. I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Little did I know it was going to be a life changing experience. Jamaica was the first place to visit on our cruise. From the cruise ship, the country looked absolutely magnificent and beautiful. I expected it to be filled with riches and luxury. When I first stepped off of the boat, I was shocked. Jamaica was not quite what I had imagined. The shopping areas were swamped with people. I was constantly being bombarded with questions from Jamaicans asking me if I wanted to buy their product or get my hair braided. I politely said no thank you and moved along.
