Subject: How I Met Your Mother “The Exploding Meatball Sub” Season 6, Episode 20 - Aired: April 11th, 2011

The Director: Pamela Fryman - Fryman is best known for directing all but 12 episodes of How I Met Your Mother. She started her career with the show The John Davidson Show as an assistant, and slowly moved up the ladder till she reached the position of a director. She also had a hand in the production of Friends, The King of Queens, and Two and a Half Men. Throughout her career she’s been the winner of 2 Daytime Emmys and in 2011 accepted the Dorothy Arzner Award, established to recognize women directors. Currently still directing episodes of How I Met Your Mother.

Summary: The episode begins with the main character, Ted Mosby, narrating as is usual on the show. He’s at a point in his life where he is designing a building for his friend Barney’s company. Unfortunately there are people protesting the destruction of the building on the site where Ted’s building is to be constructed. It’s always been Ted’s dream to build a skyscraper in New York city and it might be ruined by the protesters, led by Ted’s current girlfriend Zoey. Understandably his friends are concerned. They point out how Ted and Zoey fight constantly as opposed to Marshall and Lily’s relationship which is extremely supportive. In this episode Marshall also admits he hates his job and decides to quit and this greatly upsets Barney. Later after getting having gotten fed up with supporting Marshall completely Lily plans to leave for Spain, but changes her mind at the last moment. You then find out that Barney wasn’t so much upset about Marshall leaving as he was about meatball sub day. He was previously humiliated by Marshall when he pointed out that Barney had gotten meatball sub on his tie. Barney had invented an exploding sub as revenge and planned to unleash it on Marshall the next meatball sub day, but Marshall quit before then. Ted realizes that having a relationship where the two always challenge each other isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and he decides he needs to break up with Zoey. Flash Forward ten years in and Barney has faked being on his death-bed in order to convince Marshall to eat a meatball sub as his dying
