Equality 7-2521 Character Analysis

In the world of Anthem everyone is equal, and live by following the roles they are given in their society. Everyone is assigned a name and has no control of their lives, not even being allowed to talk to the opposite gender. There is one person that went against the rules and changed his fate, he is Equality 7-2521. In the beginning Equality 7-2521's moral assessment of a sin was very different, however by the end of the story it changed greatly . This was caused by two factors the meeting of a girl called Liberty 5-3000 and the discovery of electricity. Throughout the story his thinking has changed from what he was told was right, to what he believed was right.

"The Teachers were just, for they had been appointed by the Councils, and the Councils are the voice of all justice, for they are the voice of all men" shows that Equality 7-2521 believed in the council's decision in the beginning. He says this quote, because to him the council's decisions are absolute and can't be wrong. Although he thinks this it eventually changes to the opposite of that. "We are defying the will of our council" shows the change in his thoughts towards the end of the story. Equality 7-2521 no longer believes in the council but now even defies it. In the beginning Equality 7-2521 only thought of what the council told him, and didn't disobey any orders given to him, but it eventually changed. By the end of the Story, Equality 7-2521 decided to defy the council and rebel against them. He plans to eventually create a city of his own. That city will have none of the restrictions from the council's laws, where everyone can live with the freedom they
