Equality In Dalton Conley's Book 'You May Ask Yourself'

The standards of equality, according to chapter 7 of Dalton Conley’s book, “You May Ask Yourself,” can be broken up into three different categories. The three categories entail ontological equality, equality of opportunity, and equality of condition. When it comes to ontological equality, “the notion that everyone is created equal at birth,”(Conley 247) it can be brought into debate if this is true or not. When looking at social class, there can be a great discrepancy, when it comes to the fact that everyone is born equal. Granted, when looking at a vague term, everyone is born equal. Everyone in the society they live in is born with a certain equality, but as time progresses, that equality changes. Secondly, when looking at equality of opportunity, “the idea that everyone has an equal chance to achieve wealth, social prestige, and power because the rules of the game, so to speak, are the same for everyone” (Conley 247), it is true that people have the right to work hard for their chance to achieve wealth, power and social prestige, but those who are born into families that already have made a name for themselves, do not have to undergo the struggles that others had to undergo.
