The Era of Good Feelings is a collective expression for the period of political history from 1817-1825 which registered a sense of political harmony. nationalism, national purpose and sectional unity in the United States as a consequence of the War of 1812. The phrase was first coined by a Boston newspaper to capture the sense of national pride among the people. The Republicans came to power after the downfall of the Federalists in this era and enjoyed the de facto status as the only governing party in the United States. This period is closely linked with James Monroe’s presidency as his ultimate goal revolved around national unity and economic resurrection. War of 1812 was the pivoting element in giving the final push to end the Jeffersonian era and led to the birth of an era which saw the rise of Republican party as the dominant power in US politics. However, this era turned out to be experimental and saw the change of the political perspective of the Republican party and their tendency to lean towards the long-buried federalist ideologies and acceptance of Hamiltonian system as the foundation of economy. It might have been the need of that time that the Republican party had to skin the Jeffersonian belief and lead the country towards the ideologies that are most reasonable and applicable. Even though Federalist party died after John Adams, they remained artificially alive all through this era and discreetly changed the future of the United States. Thus, Federalist party won on the long term albeit their flame went out in the beginning.
