In this passage, there are two very compelling arguments. According to Eric Williams, “Slavery was not born of racism: rather, racism was the consequence of slavery.” He claims that the slavery of African Americans was solely economic. Winthrop D. Jordan claims that, “Rather than slavery causing ‘prejudice’, or vice versa, they seem to have generated each other.”
In Williams’ argument, he says that slave labor and trading in the New World originally involved Indians. The indigenous people fell victim to a poor diet, disease from Europeans, excessive labor, and being unable to adjust to the white man’s way of life.
