Ernest Miller Hemingway was raised in a sexist/ racist time period. Almost all of Ernest Hemingway's works show some type of sexism or racism. Two of his main short stories are “Indian Camp” and “The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife”. In “Indian camp” Nick's father has to deliver a woman's baby, she has been in labor for two days. Sadly even though her situation is so dangerous, men still don`t care. This short story showed lots of examples of racism and sexism. In “The Doctor and the Doctor's wife” the Doctor and Dick have a little quarrel. The doctor was not expecting a native american to actually fight back to a white man. Ernest encountered lots of important life events. As a little boy his mother would dress him up like a little girl. She would treat him as if he was a female meanwhile his father would try to make him seem manly. As he got older he went to Oak Park, River Forest High school there,he would constantly lie and make up stories to the other kids, this is one of the reasons he was inspired to be a writer. After high school he wanted to go into war but he was rejected, so instead he went into the red cross and became an ambulance driver. There he fell in love with an older woman, but she dumped him because he was too young for her.Luckily Because of that tragedy he wrote “A farewell to Arms”, and it ended up being a huge hit. Ernest Hemingway was married four times, but had lots of girlfriends. He found it hard to remain loyal. Ernest even admits that he feels that one girl is not enough. His first wife was Hadley Richardson, his second was Pauline Pfeiffer, his third was Martha Gellhorn, and his fourth was Mary Welsh Hemingway. Ernest had three children. The first is Jack Hemingway, he had him with Hadley. The other two children were Gregory and Patrick Hemingway both with Pauline Pfeiffer. Hemingway also encountered many tragedies in his lifetime which actually led to major depression, like how His father committed suicide, his mother died of a sickness and one of his wives died. He ended up having to find an escape from all of his stress so he became interested in bullfighting, fishing and hunting.
