The theme of family is shown through the similarities and differences in the novels Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and Dragonwings by Laurence Yep. The characters in these novels can be compared and contrasted by the character, setting, and plot of the novel. Esperanza Rising and Dragonwings have a lot of similarities and differences.
In the novels Dragonwings and Esperanza Rising, similarities and differences are shown through their character. In Esperanza Rising the main character Esperanza has to leave because her Uncle is after the family’s mother and fortune so they have to move away to Mexico even though it is hard to leave their home. Esperanza Rising shows family through setting when Esperanza moves away to America, another country that speaks a completely different language, and faces new life style. She has to work every day instead of playing like she used to and she has to learn how to communicate with people who don’t know spanish by learning the whole new language. She has Isabel and the rest of the family to teach and guide her. Moonshadow too moves to a whole new country and has to learn the new language and work like selling papers, there he has his family to support him. The novels also both have the characters moving away from their home and lose at least one of their family members. Moonshadow leaves his grandma and his mother in the Middle Kingdom while Esperanza leaves Mexico without her Abuelita and her dead. The novels are different because Esperanza doesn’t move to the new country by choice. When Ryan wrote, “Sadness and anger tangled in Esperanza’s stomach as thought of all that she was leaving: her friends, her school, her life as it once was, Abuelita. And Papa. She felt as though she was leaving him too” it explained how Esperanza felt about leaving and all the things that she would be missing and leaving. She has to move away unless she wants to be under the power of Tio Luis.
