Law is a structure of rules that a society puts in to place so as to maintain order. Law must be definite this means that it must give direction on what follows and what contravenes it. The law must also be a practice of a society where the society must know it and be conversant with it i.e. it must be publicized and open. Law cannot be retroactive and it must never conflict with justice at any time. It must be seen to instill the correct values in the society and aim to get justice to all that are wronged. In addition law must be owned by the society it administers in that it regulates the society holistically.
Freedom on the other hand is a state where individuals are liberated in that they are free to undertake several actions in the social setting. Law is not meant to deny freedom but to protect the freedom individuals in the society have. Law assures freedom to life, speech, and association in any social contract.
Law has three functions according to theories where firstly it is to achieve some end state; secondly is to do justice; and lastly to resolve conflict. In this context law and freedom can be related in that law guarantees the freedom of the society. Without freedom in a social setting governed by a social contract there is no other way to guarantee the freedom of individuals if law is not put in place. The presence of law makes individuals respect the rights and freedoms of other persons and makes it easy to control unruliness and maintain order since persons have the perception that they are free.
Law and Ethics
Law as described earlier is put in place to maintain law and order. Ethics in this concept is doing the right thing at the right time and at the right place in the right manner. This means that when one does anything that is not ok then it is unethical. Bringing in to consideration of law then doing the wrong is considered as illegal. In view of this fact one can deduct that doing anything illegal makes it illegal therefore one must remain ethical to be legally correct this is an overlap of the two.
However, they may not necessarily overlap in that not all unethical things are illegal. One person may see it as unethical but the system allows it in law. This can be presented in view of the fact that there are many differences in society and the different groups all have different practices which allow certain practices while other rebukes them. This means that one may view something unethical while to others it may be ethical while the practice may be legal.
Law and ethics are closely related in that ethical value and the principles of law overlap in their mandate; but ethics are more observed in society especially where it is a religious society. What's more is that society has defined codes of ethics that may be either entrenched in law but may be practiced more than the law.
Law and Happiness
Happiness is a state of mind and thus depends on conditions; law on the other hand is outlined where it must be followed in all seasons. Some associate happiness with good life and this makes it seasonal since rarely will one have a fulfilling life at all times. Law can resolve conflicts in society this makes people happy since they are able to understand each other. Law can also be an ends to a means and this makes people have guaranteed rights where they are protected thus one can deduct happiness in society. When justice is accomplished by law then society is left happy in that they celebrate their safety and victory.
Law actually brings happiness to those who abide by it but it causes grieve to those who break it. This can be seen when people are punished by the law that governs the society; such individuals can only wish that law does not exist so that they can be able to fulfill their wrong actions and remain free. To those that law protects from the harmful actions always remain happy. Happiness and law can be said to be interconnected in that there is no legal happiness without law.
