The Challenges Of Non-Traditional Students

In our society today, it is hard to get anywhere without a quality education, and the skills and knowledge that come from that education. When it comes to higher education, there are many sacrifices that must be made in order to obtain the knowledge and success we as students strive for. One of the most significant demands of our learning is studying, however I have found that while studying in necessary to our success, it is not always practical, and sometimes almost impossible to fit into our lives and our schedules. For traditional students, balancing school, studying and their personal lives does not always come as a challenge, however for a non-traditional student balances these same three things poses many unique challenges. When comparing the expectations and realities of studying, we will typically see that for traditional students the comparisons line up and they face minimal struggles, but for non-traditional students the aspects of each are vastly different and they struggle to overcome their personal obstacles in order to find success. There are many pieces of advice that we are given throughout our youth when it comes to our future to ensure we get the most from our schooling, one of the biggest being to study. For a traditional student in grades k-12, studying is typically an easy accomplishment to achieve. For those students, many of them are free of responsibility so it is easy for them to fit time in their schedule for studying. Students at that age normally do not have children to raise and bills to pay, and on the occasion they do maintain a job, it is typically only part time, and not vital to their survival. Traditional students seem to have an ideal situation when it comes to studying: they have an adequate amount of time to study on a regular basis, and are able to complete their studying in a peaceful, quiet atmosphere. Due to not having the responsibilities of an adult, they are also able to obtain a sufficient amount of rest so they can focus their full attention on the subjects they are studying. While traditional students are met with the ideals of studying due to not having much responsibility, much changes when it comes to a non-traditional adult student who faces an abundance of responsibility, and studying is not always reasonable or attainable. Non-traditional adult students face obstacles unique to their group that may not be understood by traditional students in high school, or even college students that have most recently graduated high school. Most non-traditional students that I know have many obligations that have to be taken care of before they can focus their attention on their school work and studying. A non-traditional student does not typically have the convenience of relying heavily on their parent to help support them. Many non-traditional student have a family and children that always have to come first. A child’s needs cannot just be put to the side and neglected because their parent has homework or a project to complete, or needs to study. In order to support themselves and their families, non-traditional students almost always have a job outside of school as well, and due to raising children and having to be there for their children, have no option other than to work third shift so that they can attend classes during the day. While many of these situations apply to non-traditional adult students, we must acknowledge that with societal changes, there are a growing number of traditional high school students who face these same obstacles as well due to the struggles of poverty as well as teenage pregnancy.
