Many young adults and teens share a similar dream in life; They wish to go through college, become successful through a dream job, have a beautiful spouse and children, and own a nice home. But is this dream truly ensured for all individuals? Is hard work and dedication the only key to achieving this objective? This common dream is part of the American Dream. The American Dream may provide the motivation for success, but it disillusions humanity. It spreads misconceptions about equal opportunity and creates a false sense of security.
Many believe that each person is deserving of equal opportunity in life. Unfortunately, equal opportunity isn’t quite there in America. The upper class has the upper hand, while the lower class are scraping by.

Many people including myself are told in high school that if we all work rigorously and go into a high paying field, we will be able to attain a job, therefore being able to pay for a house and a car. This is not a guarantee. It can be strenuous finding a job after college with our growing competitive market. Even with a job, students are still in a ridiculous amount of debt. Housing has also escalated to an absurd amount over the last few decades. Students can barely afford rent or housing; Most of the time, they end up living with family or a roommate. We are seeing an increasingly heavy amount of Millennials starting families at later times in their lives additionally. Our current generation of Millennials is facing a major financial burden. While the generations of the past may have been secured in their lives, this is not the case for today’s generation of young people.
Today’s society has changed drastically from the past. The current American Dream is no longer relevant. It has become harder and harder to achieve what our current American Dream defines as “success.” Our country requires a new dream. A dream not of monetary success, but of kindness. Helping others around us, even if for a miniscule task, can fare a long way. Joy is contagious; It ordinarily may inspire others to help spread it.
