The best fiction always seems believable and logical with the situation of the story line. This is certainly true in the fiction excerpts from the novels Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen and Call of The Wild by Jack London. In the excerpts both main characters go through intense battles to survive and adapt to the changes they have to overcome. While reading we learn a lot about each of the characters. After reading the excerpts from Brian's Winter and Call of the Wild it is easier to see that both of the characters thoughts and actions reveal aspects of their personality.
To Begin, in the excerpt, Brian's Winter it is obvious that Brian does not know how to handle the wild life. Brian is to face a bear that follows a smell of food onto his camp. As soon as Brian wakes up he immediately freaks out from the bear’s presence and decides to kick the bear thinking that will make it rush away. As said in the story “He was sleeping with his head in the opening of the shelter and he had his face out and when he opened his eyes he saw what appeared to be a wall of black-brown fur directly in front of him…Brian pulled back a foot. Both characters are unfamiliar on how to deal with the wildlife around them. Brian doesn’t handle the wildlife around him very well until later when he and the bear interact. He then realizes that his understanding of the bear was wrong. It is also evident that they must modify to their surroundings. As Buck is looking for a place to sleep he is surprised by another dog, Bilee, who is sleeping in the snow. When this happens he notices how to sleep without being cold.
