Aspirations and fantasies are utilized in both texts to represent characters and the relationships in their lives. Citizen Kane by Welles and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald both entirely focus on each protagonists ambitions. Jay Gatz in TGG is the story of a man with new wealth longing for his dream, the love of his life, Daisy. Whereas Kanes dream in Citizen Kane isn't as clear, he has everything In his life, which he then loses, he dream could be to not feel lonely. While both of these men are successful in their business lives, Kane and Gatsby both live seemingly unfilled lives of incomplete dreams. “I run a couple of newspapers, what do you do?” Kane says this when in conversation showing the comfort he feels in his occupation. In both texts Welles and Fitzgerald spread the message of just how important wealth and power can be to a man.

Kane is just living in the hope that someday he call fill that lonely emptiness in his life that his parents have created. Due to the lack of love Kane has seen in his life has made it difficult for him to pursue love in his own personal life. As Susan says in Citizen Kane “you never get me what i want, just what you think i want”, this shows that Kane is trying to show love to complete his dream but is unsuccessful.
