“The Coddling of the American Mind” by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt discusses how schools and colleges are assisting students in becoming ‘thin skinned’, they’re showing students that they can become offended by anything. Lukianoff and Haidt provide evidence behind colleges allowing microaggressions to control what students can and can’t say and also restricting professors on what they are able to teach. Trigger warnings are alerts that professors are expected to issue if something in a course might cause a strong emotional response. Lukianoff and Haidt provide evidence to support their claim. This way of teaching makes students analyze topics and have classroom discussions. This causes lively debates, that can cause conflicts between students to occur. Due to students becoming thin skinned, colleges campuses have put vindictive protectiveness into place. In Lukianoff’s and Haidt’s essay, they gave an example about the deans and department chairs at ten University of California schools were presented examples of microaggressions. They stated that some of the microaggressions were: “America is the land of opportunity” or “I believe the most qualified person should get the job”. Schools putting these into place isn’t helping their students. These new terms and the placement of vindictive protectiveness isn’t preparing student for the real world. Professors are putting trigger warnings on the work they provide because it can cause a flashback or discomfort to one of their students.
