In both short stories, “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, reveals, the conflict of housewives seeking for freedom and independence from their husband during the late 19th century: a time period where women did not really had rights in society, they were viewed as second-class citizens and their lives were controlled by their husbands.
The Story of an Hour is about a fragile woman who is suffering from a heart disease, called Mrs. Mallard. In this story, Mrs. Mallard receives the news that her husband has died in a railroad accident from her sister Josephine. After Mrs. Mallard receives the news about the death of her husband, she reacts with sadness at first and then retires to her room to be alone and instead of continuing feeling sorrowful about the death of her husband, she begins to feeling happy and relieved, because she realizes that she is now a free and independent woman, “Free! Body and soul free!” She seems to have found a remedy to life, which is her husband's death.
