The Epic of Gilgamesh and the book of Genesis are legendary literature of their time. Even today, these stories are looked at and analyzed for their usage of literary devices. These authors wrote the pieces of literature at different times, but they both have similar elements in them. They also have elements that are different that are special. In the Epic of Gilgamesh and the book of Genesis, the devastation of the flood was global, so it did not affect only one part of the world. Noah and Utnapishtim both share righteous characteristics. The higher powers in both stories were angry at mankind because of their actions. The boats in both stories are described in detail. In both stories, the main characters voiced complaints about having the responsibility of building the boat, and the two boats were made with a lot of room and a lot of compartments. In Genesis, the flood was sent by Yahweh, the Jewish god. The sender of the flood in Gilgamesh was multiple gods. Yahweh announced that a flood would be coming by direct means from god. The announcement in Gilgamesh was through a dream. Although the two boats were similar, there is many things different about them. The ark in Gilgamesh was six stories tall, while Noah’s ark was only three stories tall. The shape of Noah’s ark was rectangle, and the shape of the boat in Gilgamesh was square. Perhaps this was because there was groundwater as well as heavy rain in Genesis, and there was only heavy rain in Gilgamesh. One of the major differences in the two stories is the duration of the flood. In Genesis, the flood lasted forty days and nights, and the flood in Gilgamesh was dramatically lower.
