Many authors have written novels in which characters seek individuality but are thwarted in their quests by the presence of other people. In both contents, The Great Gatsby and Their Eyes Were Watching God contained many similarities. Both have the main characters telling the story, both were produced around the same time period and both contain the love, romance, and historic drama the authors like. The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, shares the life of a rich white man in the 1920’s after the WWI, named Nick Carraway. Desperate to meet old colleagues, he moves to West Egg were to catch up on the life of his cousin lifestyle and come into paths with a stranger that claims the name of being Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby, being trapped in his love for Daisy, is one of these characters who has their individuality changed. He is blinded by romance and it leads to his self-destruction, the downfall. Gatsby is a newly wealthy man who throws parties to attract the attention of Daisy a married woman who he had a crush on since he first laid his eyes on her. He would do anything to win her love over, even cover up a murder that she is guilty of. His feelings took him too far from being saved from the death that had awaited him, but his actions have caused Daisy to be Imprisoned between the love for Tom; her husband who constantly had affairs behind her back, and Gatsby, a man who had been addicted to her since he seen her.“made a miserable nut irresistible journey to Louisville on the last of his army pay…walking the streets where their footsteps had clicked together” (pg. 152). The quote represents Gatsby’s love for Daisy. But in the end, Gatsby’s individuality was destroyed before this as his self-destruction killed him. Author, Scott Fitzgerald does well to captured the envision of Gatsby has with his and Daisy’s relationship to show when Daisy hits Tom’s maiden with Gatsby’s automobile.
