The settings in the stories “The Lady with the Dog” and “The Open Boat” are important to give the reader a perspective into the characters emotions during the difficult situations each face. The main characters in “The Lady with the Dog”, Dmitri and Anna, are both unhappy with their lives away from the city. After meeting, they begin an affair. Dmitri did not think it was anything more than a fling. He realizes after he returns home that it was much more. In “The Open Boat”, a crew of four men are in a small dinghy, hoping to be rescued after their ship sinks. The different settings help describe both the happiness and hopelessness that the characters experience during their journey.
