The patriotic poet, Julian Grenfell touched the hearts of many Englishmen with his poem and was credited of it being in The Times, shortly after his death, credited for martyr. His poem praise nature and gives the hint of an unknown and unaccredited beauty of war and how the nature that surrounds it is the fruitfulness of growth. His pleasant and unthreatening words almost attract men to join with nature and of course, his fellow war mates. The poem uses descriptive language and techniques, which I will explain further on, to distract and rid the sorrow and bitterness of war with an optimistic and positive vibe. This is clear as the imagery that is described has not the stereotype association, we link to war today. He mostly focuses on the environment around him such as the sun, the skies, birds and trees. The title even gives a sense of no trepidation and seems very upbeat and straightforward. The poet is basically summarising that war is an amusement and all that have been ever involved in it are considered as heroes. This optimism is highlighted from the quote: “Life is Colour and Warmth and Light”. The current of this energy flows right throw the poem even at the quotation “And he is dead who will not fight”. This quotation easily speculated the fact that life after death of a soldier will be a place which will be a positive scene of imagery. Julian also uses the word ‘dearth’ in his poem. It means an inadequate amount. The language technique he uses is called archaic
