Themes of African American culture portrayed by Denzel Washington through acting and Character Choice in the Films Training Day and The Great Debaters
Films allow people to socialize and come together while seeing relatable aspects to life on the big screen. Film and theater are enormous parts of human culture, without the art of film, one might not be able to imagine their life in a different setting or new fantasy. Films enable the mind to get away and to be sucked into a bliss of creativity and utopia. Often when watching films one feels like they are there, as if the film is their reality for short time. Films portray not only the present, but the past and future. The art of film enables people to relate to other cultures and time periods.
However, these films are not relatable just because of the story that is taking place, but because of the phenomenal acting that enables one to relate to the film. Sharon Carnicke, a professor of theater at the University of Southern California recently did a study on the poetry of acting. She found that the way an actor uses their body and their tone of voice help furnish the films aesthetic value and the way the film relates to its viewers (1). Perseverance is why there is African America culture today. Through fighting for freedom, to fighting for equality African American have preserved throughout their time in America. The perseverance is seen in the hard work of many men and women in the labor force as social workers, doctors, garbage men, piolets, teachers, actors, musicians, and inventors. The work ethic is there because of the persistence and perseverance of the ones that came before
