In William Shakespeare’s 8th tragedy Macbeth, the idea about life that is explored is, having too much ambition with no guide to its proper use, can irreversible change how a person thinks, feels and acts in or about the world around them. The idea is strongly represented by how the character of Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth change throughout the play; first a soldier and then a thane, finally a murderer. While Lady Macbeth held herself as vigorous and zealous, and then fell into a psychotic and crumbling state towards the end of the play.

It is not often that a strong female lead is presented in a shakespearian ere play or story; yet much like her husband her unguided ambition ended with her death. Her aspiration to become queen and for her husband to “esteem’st the ornament of life [and not] live a coward in thine own esteem ”(I, vii, 40-45), pushing Macbeth to murder Duncan. This action drastically change Lady Macbeth’s personality from her regular strong self to a weaker and less mentally stable, even starting to have” slumbery agitation [of] her walking and other actual performances” (V, i, 10-20); showing her descent into madness. For a women as willful and determined as Lady Macbeth the actions she took to have this change in character, where in a direct path of her unguided ambition leading to her plunge of the castle tower.

Without the necessary guide needed to use their ambition in a way that benefits all; Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, fell victim to theirs, demonstrated by the unfortunate end both of the protagonist shared and the actions leading up to them. Showing how a ambition misguided or unguided ambition will lead to the a change in how a person will think, feel, and act in the world around
