Leadership is when a person takes ownership and thrives to make the right choices for his group. The term leader and boss should not be confused. A leader’s main focus is to bring his group to a victory by making the right decisions by motivating their team, whereas a boss’s main goal is to simply get things done. Leadership can be characterized by three traits: communication, strength, and loyalty. A true leader must show all characteristics in order to be considered great. Beowulf shows leadership by expressing his skills through his actions towards his warriors. Communication is a language connection between people by exchanging words and information. With communication, it is not enough to speak; a person must make sure that what is being spoken is also being understood and interpreted. Beowulf makes communication efforts with the warriors by telling them to stay behind so he can go and fight Grendel. Beowulf shows loyalty by staying to fight Grendel alone. His loyal men accompanied Beowulf even though they knew the odds were in their favor to be killed. “By one: death was my errand and the fate they had earned. Now Grendel and I are called together and I’ve come.” Beowulf knew that anyone going with him to defeat Grendel would be hurt or killed; he did not want his men to be in any danger. The men that followed Beowulf showed their loyalty towards their leader by helping him fight even if that meant losing their own lives. Leadership is characterized by communication, strength, and loyalty. Leadership must not be confused with the term “boss.” Beowulf represents all three characteristics by using communication to warn his men to not go with him to fight Grendel, using his strength to kill Grendel with his bare hands, and Beowulf’s men show loyalty by making a decision to follow Beowulf to kill
