How would you like to have spent your whole life chasing after your life goals to only end up with people thinking you are a failure? Beowulf has such a story. His goal in life was to protect his people and his land from enemies, whether human or supernatural creatures. Beowulf sought to accomplish this by becoming the greatest warrior of his time. Even though he succeeded in being victorious time after time, some readers believe Beowulf failed because he died in his last battle. After studying the poem and considering the character of Beowulf, his final battle against the dragon was not a failure but a sacrificial victory making him one of the most epic heroes of all time.

This prediction allows Beowulf to go into battle to win no matter the personal cost. By predicting his death, Beowulf knew his final victory would only be won through the sacrifice of his life. Therefore, his death does not mean his final battle was a defeat but just the cost of the victory to save his people and his tribe. Beowulf was not afraid to fight the dragon because he knew he was going to die anyway, so he might as well go out with a bang, like a true warrior.
