I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 176. Chapters ten through 15 have been focused on the Finch Family. Atticus, the lawyer, has taken it upon himself to defend an African American named Tom Robinson. During this process, a mob rises from the city, threatening to kill Tom. For the first time ever, Jem purposely disobeys his father in pursuit to help him. Scout also helps by individualizing Mr. Cunningham who was the leader of the mob. In this paper I will be evaluating and connecting.I evaluate that Calpurnia is a stronger mother figure than Aunt Alexandria. My second question I have is why did the furious mob leave the jail? One possible reason why they left is because of Scout Finch. Scout individually spoke to Mr. Cunningham during the riot. Due to recognition from Scout, Mr. Cunningham feels he can be picked out from the group. If Mr. Cunningham did lynch Tom Robinson, he would definitely by punished as an individual because Scout saw him in the mob. My second reason that the mob left is because of Mr. Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham has a son named Walter who is friends with Scout. If he did kill Tom, he risks his own son finding out from Scout. Mr. Cunningham also was the leader of the mob and felt he would take most of the blame for the crime, whereas if Scout did not recognize him, he could have murdered Tom and not received a punishment because he was not the only one doing it. As one can see, Jem was very brave and courageous to stand up to his father and help out his dad in a time of need. As for Mr. Cunningham, he was faced with a very difficult decision and he chose to turn the mob around and spare Tom Robinson’s
