During the twentieth century, many countries were going through changes. People revolted, governments reformed, and economies changed. All over the world, from Russia to Latin America and from China to the United States, countries experienced reforms that changed many of their systems. Specifically, Russia and China went through extreme changes to their economies. These nations shared the system of a communist ruler after the two world wars, both falling under the submissive rule of a supreme that dictated the economy to their tailored standards. However, China began to expand their horizons in later days by creating economic alliances with other nations, allowing influential growth of their economy. Russia engaged in the arms race, creating more jobs and projects to fuel the nationalism of Russia.

China and Russia had communist governments, lead by manipulative and controlling rulers. As tyrants strived for what they want, like in Russia the mass production of steel, the communist system of command economies became inefficient. Implementing Western ideas, China began to embrace some capitalist reforms. Rulers let their citizens have more freedom, allowing some private ownership of business, as opposed to the government owning all industry. China even began to partner with the United States through Special Economic Zones (SEZs), areas that made it easier to conduct global business and increase their prosperity. However, Russia did not follow in the footsteps of China. Adamant to resist Westernization, Russia pursued the policy of isolationism.
