Before going to the OR I was sort of intimidated by the whole situation. As a student nurse I did not know how I would react to seeing a patient be cut open and I had no clue how the environment would be. Surprisingly enough, I had a great clinical experience in the OR and it ended up being an awesome day where I learned so much new information. The first surgery I saw was a total left knee replacement. I was amazed by all of the technology the OR uses and how the staff worked so flawlessly together. During each surgery there was one surgeon, two surgical techs, an anesthesiologist, and a registered nurse. One of techs assisted with surgery and the other handed the instruments to the surgeon. Before this surgery the patient had already received a fasciotomy, so we were able to see muscle, tendon, and fatty tissue on her calf. I had never seen anything like this before, so it was an amazing learning experience. I assisted the nurse with prepping the woman’s leg for surgery and then the surgeon completed the debridement session. After my OR clinical experience I definitely believe it takes a certain kind of nurse to work in this setting. My respect grew tremendously for the OR staff because I know personally that I would not be able to do their jobs. Standing for hours at a time would be very hard for me because I am one of those people always on the go at work. Also, as an RN in surgery you do not get to spend one on one time with your patient and that is something I love about the field of nursing. Due to these reasons I would not want to be an OR nurse in the future. Even though I cannot see myself working in surgery I would love to return to the OR if possible because it was such an amazing learning experience. After a day in surgery I was truly fascinated with the human body and just in awe. I really do not think there was anything that could have made my clinical experience any better because the day went great, I had a fabulous nurse, and experienced an abundance of new
