Should Confederate Monuments Be Removed?
The removal of confederate monuments has started a controversy within the United States. There have been many riots and other protests that have been made against these statues. Many people believe that they symbolize hatred against people of color and slavery, while others believe that they represent an important part of our history. Then there are the white supremacists who believe they show that they should have power over everyone. Confederate monuments are statues that were made during the Civil War because there was more violence against African Americans. They were used to essentially remind or put people of color ‘in place’ so to speak, that people didn’t like that they were gaining their own rights such as the right to vote or going to the same schools as white people. Instead of taking down these parts of history, or leaving them to represent a “offensive” event, they are adding small plaques with writing that describe a positive thing that came out of that event. In Mississippi, a university couldn’t decide if they were going to take a Confederate statue down. Instead they added “‘Although the monument was created to honor the sacrifice of local confederate soldiers, it must also remind us that the defeat of Confederacy actually meant freedom for millions of people’” (Anastasia 9). Other states can maybe start to change their monuments such as Mississippi. The monuments were not created to represent slavery, or the oppression of people of color, or even racists people. These monuments represent a time in our history that has shaped who we are today. It shaped our culture, our way of life, our government, our viewpoints, and it changed America as a whole. Removing these statues is removing a part of America. For the reasons stated above, this is why the Confederate monuments should not be taken
