Congestive Heart Failure
Congestive Heart Failure diagnosis are being made more often and morbidity is high in the first year after the diagnosis is made. There are many treatments to extend the lives of those individuals who have the diagnosis of congestive heart failure and billions are spent each year. Prevention is the key as many things such as pulmonary hypertension, obesity, and diabetes can increase the risk. Factors that may do this to the heart is fluid overload (too much salt in the diet leads to this), chronic kidney disease, heart murmurs, and diabetes. Another reason for inadequate profusion from the heart can be due to an electrical issue such as Atrial Fibrillation. “This results in the loss of atrial kick, in which up to 30% of the atrium’s volume doesn’t get to the ventricles and isn’t pumped out to the lungs and/or the aorta” (Markaity, 2012, p. 17). Anything that can damage any function of the heart from electrical too physically damaging the tissue can lead to congestive heart failure. Most of the causes relate to lifestyle choices, once the diagnosis of CHF is placed on an individual many interventions must be taken to increase life expectancy. “As the diagnosis becomes more prevalent, over 400,000 new cases will be seen every year. Twenty percent of these patients will die in the first year, and 50% will die within a 5-year period” (Markaity, 2012, p. 14).
